Whether you’re planning to list your home or you are simply thinking about the impact when guests arrive, your foyer or entryway is the first impression visitors get when they come into your home. Ironically, the entryway is often one of the most neglected areas when it comes to your home’s decor. Most are left to a drab existence, though there are some that swing the pendulum too far in the other direction, overwhelming guests with too much, too soon. 

If you want to make your entryway feel more welcoming and purposeful, the good news is, it doesn’t take a lot of time. Whether you can squeeze five minutes out of your week or a couple of hours, there are quick and easy ways to add a finishing touch to your home’s foyer, no matter the space.

Here are some quick and simple ways to take your entryway to the next level:

Invest just 15 minutes. Even if you’ve only got a couple of minutes to spend, you would be surprised at how you can transform your home’s entryway simply by performing a quick clean up of the area. Start with the exterior and shake out that dusty welcome mat or spray it off with a hose. Clean the glass in your porch light and dust the rest of it. Polish your door hardware. Once you’ve tackled the outside, switch to the interior. Remove those scattered shoes, mail and other clutter so the overall effect is more organized and clean.

Consider spending an hour. Next time you’re out, purchase an updated light fixture. You’ll be surprised at how much a new light fixture can add to your home’s look–the entire area will look refreshed. You should be able to install a fixture in about an hour. 

If you have a few hours of time, the payoff is even greater. If your home’s layout allows it, consider a well-placed accent wall. It can add visual interest to your entryway, especially if its a smaller space. Or, simply give the area some fresh paint. A new piece of wall art is another option. Avoid placing decor on the floor that is oversized for your space. That table or floor vase may match perfectly with your home’s decor, but if your entryway is on the small size, your guests will find such items to be obstructions in their pathway.
